Field Upgrading is a Canadian company based in Calgary, Alberta that specializes in the development and commercialization of an innovative sulphur removal and upgrading technology called DSU®. This groundbreaking technology utilizes molten sodium to significantly reduce sulphur, metals, acid (TAN), and asphaltenes in heavy oil feedstocks, including oil sands bitumen. DSU® not only improves the quality of feedstocks but also increases their API gravity, resulting in a higher yield compared to traditional upgrading technologies.

Additionally, DSU® eliminates the production of large amounts of coke or asphaltenes. The technology has shown promising results, with the API gravity of oil sands bitumen increasing from 8 API to 18 API, reducing the need for diluent during pipeline transportation. Field Upgrading's 10 barrel per day pilot facility in Fort Saskatchewan has successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of DSU®.
