Fietselfstedentocht is a renowned cycling event organized annually since 1912, attracting around 15,000 participants each year on Pinkstermaandag. This iconic 235-kilometer ride begins and ends in Bolsward, covering all eleven Frisian cities along the route. The event is celebrated for its blend of performance, culture, folklore, and tradition, inviting cyclists to navigate through multiple checkpoints to collect stamps, ensuring they finish before midnight. Participants start in groups of approximately 650, with staggered departures every eight minutes from the center of Bolsward. The organization, run by volunteers, emphasizes community spirit and the joy of cycling together. In addition to the main event, the Fietselfstedentocht also features a Mini Elfstedentocht and offers various services such as provisions for overnight stays, parking, and sport nutrition. Enthusiasts can also purchase unique Elfsteden shirts, adding to the event's rich tradition. With a commitment to preserving culture and creating memorable experiences, the Fietselfstedentocht is a hallmark of Frisian identity and camaraderie.
