Established in 1998 by award-winning filmmakers Stanley Nelson and Marcia Smith, Firelight Media began as an independent non-profit documentary production company, focused on creating stories that shed light on topics typically underrepresented in mainstream media. In 2008, Firelight Media shifted its focus to supporting emerging filmmakers of color, while simultaneously launching Firelight Films as a for-profit documentary production company led by Stanley Nelson.

Firelight Media's mission is to produce impactful documentary films, support filmmakers of color, and cultivate diverse audiences worldwide. They receive support from prominent organizations such as Hearthland Foundation, PBS, FRONTLINE, and Hulu, among others.
