## Description

First in Prison Inc. is a recovery and personal development organization founded by inmates to support incarcerated people seeking lasting change. Its program, FIRST (Friends In Recovery Standing Together), grew from founder Tod Coburn’s experience creating substance abuse resources while incarcerated. The organization aims to help participants prepare for release, build more fulfilling lives, and become contributing members of society.

FIRST uses a structured, year-long curriculum centered on the 12 Steps, guiding participants through self-examination, accountability, making amends, and sharing what they learn with others. The program also includes modules on topics such as guilt and shame, grief and loss, anger management, self-forgiveness, and self-esteem. Its approach addresses addiction alongside broader challenges, emphasizing healing, resilience, and supportive community.

First in Prison works to bring FIRST into California prisons and expand access to its curriculum and outreach. The organization invites individuals to support its work through donations, which help fund program development and expansion. Participant testimonials describe the guidance and coursework as meaningful supports in recovery and personal transformation.
