## Description

The Flow-MER Program is a comprehensive on-ground Monitoring, Evaluation, and Research program that aims to investigate the role of water for the environment in maintaining, protecting, and restoring ecosystems and native species in the Murray-Darling Basin. In partnership with scientists, water managers, and communities across the basin, Flow-MER strives to understand how fish, birds, vegetation, and river connectivity respond to Commonwealth environmental water. This program, led by the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder, is crucial for effective monitoring and evaluation to ensure the best outcomes for rivers, wetlands, floodplains, and the organisms and communities dependent on them. Flow-MER builds upon the foundations set by previous projects and now serves as the primary means of monitoring and evaluating the delivery of Commonwealth environmental water in the basin. Flow-MER consists of two components: evaluation and research at the basin scale organized around six basin themes and five cross-cutting themes, as well as monitoring at seven selected areas across the basin. By studying hydrology, biodiversity, ecosystem diversity, fish populations, vegetation, food webs, and water quality, Flow-MER aims to inform adaptive management and fulfill legislative requirements associated with managing Commonwealth-owned environmental water. The program acknowledges and respects the Traditional Owners as the First Peoples of the basin, recognizing their profound connection to the land and their vital role in caring for it. Flow-MER is committed to genuine partnership and meaningful engagement with Traditional Owners and Aboriginal communities, supporting the protection of Country and the continuation of spiritual and cultural practices. Through the annual forums and research presentations, Flow-MER shares the latest findings and insights, showcasing the significant work conducted across the selected areas. These knowledge-sharing initiatives aim to enhance understanding and promote collaboration among stakeholders. Overall, Flow-MER plays a crucial role in assessing the impact of Commonwealth environmental water on ecosystems and species, supporting environmental water managers, and ensuring the sustainable management of water resources in the Murray-Darling Basin.
