## Description

The First Nations Information Governance Centre (FNIGC) is an independent non-profit organization advancing First Nations data sovereignty and information governance. Its vision is for every First Nation to achieve data sovereignty in alignment with its distinct worldview. FNIGC supports communities in strengthening their ability to collect, protect, use, and share information, and promotes evidence-based decision-making on matters affecting First Nations.

The Centre conducts national surveys designed by and for First Nations, undertakes research, and provides information and resources for communities. Through its First Nations Data Centre, people can explore available data and submit data requests. FNIGC also offers education and training, including workshops and The Fundamentals of OCAP® online course. OCAP®—Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession—sets out First Nations principles for governing data and information. Additional initiatives include the First Nations Data Governance Strategy, a Data Sovereignty Research Collaborative, knowledge translation, and a national student bursary. FNIGC works with member organizations and partners to support First Nations-led approaches to research and information, and to help Nations use timely, relevant data in advocacy and assessment of policies, programs, and services.
