Their mission is to deepen our capacity to examine the current state of affairs and envision a better future through the power of art. Originally formed in anticipation of the 2016 United States elections, For Freedoms aimed to center artists' voices in public discourse and expand the definition of democracy participation.

It has since grown into a robust movement, producing artwork and nationwide campaigns tied to significant political events. Their 50 State Initiative was named the largest creative collaboration in United States history, and in 2020, they launched the 2020 Awakening, engaging artists, museums, schools, corporations, and civic organizations across the country. For Freedoms is now the largest community for creative civic engagement in the United States, bringing together thousands of artists and organizations to foster radical imagination and initiate new national conversations.

They also strive to create a new economic model for art and culture, providing financial and educational opportunities for artists. Founded by a coalition of artists, academics, and organizers, For Freedoms remains artist-led and is committed to promoting a culture of listening, healing, and justice
