## Description

The Portuguese Federation of Speleology (FPE-APD) is a nonprofit association founded in 1986 to promote the study and protection of caves and their surrounding environments. Recognized as an association of public utility since 2018, it brings together Portugal’s speleology community and supports the practice, research, training, and public communication of the discipline.

The federation coordinates technical commissions covering scientific research, cave diving, rescue, education, sport, and other specialist areas, including thematic groups focused on karst landscapes, bats, amphibians, fungi and lichens, and cave climates. It provides information on federation membership, registration, and the federated speleologist card, alongside management platforms and annual activity and financial reports.

FPE also organizes workshops, training activities, and the National Speleology Congress, creating opportunities for learning and sharing research. Its publications include the FPE Bulletin, and its website shares news, events, and resources related to speleology in Portugal. Through these services and initiatives, the federation supports collaboration while encouraging responsible exploration and the conservation of the underground environment.
