## Description

The Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels, established by the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels in 1950, is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to peace, humanity, and international understanding. This prestigious award sparks crucial debates and discussions through the thought-provoking works of its recipients. From renowned authors like Salman Rushdie to impactful activists such as Tsitsi Dangarembga, the Friedenspreis recognizes those who challenge societal norms and advocate for justice and peace. The recent honoree, the Polish-American historian Anne Applebaum, exemplifies this dedication to addressing autocratic systems, underscoring the fragility of democracies. Through literature, film, and activism, the Friedenspreis laureates use storytelling and art to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity, making them pivotal figures in shaping our collective cultural landscape.
