## Description

The Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) is Pakistan’s independent institution for addressing complaints of tax maladministration. Established in 2000, it aims to investigate grievances promptly, fairly and independently, help rectify injustices experienced by taxpayers, and support a more efficient and accessible tax system. Its work builds on the broader ombudsman system established in Pakistan to check maladministration in federal departments.

The FTO provides information on taxpayers’ rights, complaint management and filing procedures, and offers an online complaint system. Its website also publishes reported and recent decisions, special reports, annual reports, tax laws and guidance on the institution’s legal framework. Additional resources include information about territorial jurisdiction, advisory committees, public grievance redressal, internships, events and procurement notices.

The institution represents Pakistan at national and international ombudsman forums and participates in associations including the Asian Ombudsman Association, the Forum of Pakistan Ombudsman, the International Ombudsman Institute and the OIC Ombudsman Association.
