## Description

Future Seas is a collaborative, interdisciplinary research initiative focused on understanding how climate change may affect fisheries along the U.S. West Coast and evaluating ways to manage those impacts. Its work centers on swordfish, albacore tuna, and coastal pelagic fisheries, each of which raises distinct ecological and socioeconomic considerations. The initiative brings together climate scientists, oceanographers, ecologists, economists, and social scientists, working closely with fishers and fishery managers.

Future Seas combines dynamical, statistical, and conceptual models in a shared framework. These models are used to project physical, ecological, and socioeconomic changes and to assess uncertainty in the projections. The resulting analysis supports the evaluation of fisheries management strategies under potential future conditions. Rather than offering commercial products, Future Seas provides research, modeling, and management-strategy evaluation to inform adaptation planning for west coast fisheries. The initiative is funded by the NOAA Climate Program Office’s Climate and Fisheries Adaptation program and NOAA Fisheries’ Office of Science and Technology.
