## Description

Garrett Roell is a computational synthetic biologist and assistant professor at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. His research focuses on metabolic regulation and improving biofuel production from non-food crops, linking genes and gene expression to fermentation outcomes. His interests include machine learning, metabolic engineering, and web development, bringing together biological research and computational tools.

Roell’s work includes metabolic models and analyses of microbes with biofuel potential, including Rhodococcus opacus, as well as research on syngas fermentation and microbial metabolism. His publications cover genome-scale modeling, machine learning for fermentation prediction, synthetic biology, and the use of artificial intelligence to support scientific knowledge mining.

Alongside academic research, Roell develops websites and interactive software. His projects include ImpactDB, a crowd-sourced database and machine-learning toolbox for bioprocess research, and a browser-based tool for flux balance analysis. Other projects range from analytics and sports-trend sites to probability simulators, games, and data visualizations. He is also a co-founder and chief technology officer of All Things Analysis, an analytics website offering articles, rankings, and actionable insights.
