## Description

The Gas Index is a US-focused online service that helps drivers find and compare gasoline prices. It tracks more than 170,000 stations across all 50 states and Washington, DC, and displays average prices by state alongside station-level information. Users can search near a ZIP code, check prices on a map, and contribute local updates by logging a price or submitting a photo from the pump. The service combines historical weekly survey data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration with station listings from Google Places, prices gathered through AI voice agents calling stations, and crowdsourced submissions. It reports verified prices and provides context on regional differences, while warning that prices change frequently and may not match the amount currently posted at a pump. The Gas Index was built by AI engineer Matt Cortland and AI researcher John Fleming of Prime Directive AI. Its website also offers a changelog, state-by-state comparisons, and information about its methodology. Drivers are encouraged to call stations to confirm prices before making a special trip.
