## Description

The Georgia Council for the Social Studies (GCSS) is a statewide professional organization that advocates for, supports, and celebrates high-quality social studies teaching for Georgia students. Founded in 1963, GCSS brings educators together to strengthen their practice and advance its vision of preparing students to become knowledgeable decision makers and engaged citizens in an interconnected world. It is an affiliate of the National Council for the Social Studies and is led by an elected Board of Trustees and officers, with an executive director overseeing operations.

GCSS offers professional learning, mentoring opportunities, member resources, and an annual conference featuring sessions for educators. Its resources include the GCSS Quad Text Set Hub, aligned with Georgia Standards of Excellence, children’s literature connected to state social studies standards, useful links, and GCSS Explorer resources. The organization also supports the Georgia Social Studies Fair, providing handbooks, entry information, worksheets, and scoresheets for regional and state participation. GCSS recognizes achievement through annual awards and shares position statements, archives, and information about past award winners.
