## Description

The Independent Evaluation Office (IEO) of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) plays a key role in maintaining the impartial evaluation function within the GEF. Established in July 2003 by the GEF Council, the IEO operates independently from GEF policy-making and assistance management. Their core functions include strategic-level evaluations that focus on cross-cutting themes and approaches for delivering global environmental benefits. The office produces a GEF-wide annual performance report and conducts institutional evaluations, assessing governance, policies, and strategies. Every four years, the IEO undertakes a Comprehensive Evaluation of the GEF. Collaborating with professional evaluation networks, the office develops approaches, sets standards, and provides training, particularly in environmental evaluation and the interplay between environment and socioeconomic development. By staying at the forefront of innovative methodologies and engaging with the global environmental community, the IEO ensures accountability and fosters continuous learning within the GEF ecosystem.
