Automata is a free, open-source access control layer from Operational Intelligence Inc. that connects AI agents such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Grok to messaging services and databases. Its available connectors include WhatsApp, Telegram, and PostgreSQL, with iMessage, SMS, MySQL, and MongoDB listed as coming soon. Automata lets organisations define exactly which conversations and database tables an AI can access, while separating read permissions from sending messages or making changes.

Rather than relying on an AI model to follow instructions, Automata checks each tool request against permissions before it reaches the underlying resource. Tokens are tied to a single connection, and out-of-scope requests are denied. Users can revoke tokens or permissions at any time.

The MIT-licensed software can be inspected and self-hosted on a local machine, VPS, or homelab, or deployed through Railway. A hosted option is also available, with managed setup and updates. Automata is designed to run on infrastructure controlled by its users, offering a transparent way to govern AI access to sensitive conversations and operational data.
