## Description

Giga, launched in 2019, is a global initiative with the aim of connecting every school in the world to the Internet. With 2.7 billion people still offline, and the majority residing in developing countries, the lack of connectivity hampers educational opportunities for children and limits their potential. Giga believes that closing this digital divide necessitates global cooperation, leadership, and innovation in both finance and technology. By connecting schools, Giga enables children to develop vital digital skills and access online learning content. Moreover, schools function as anchor points for surrounding communities, facilitating connectivity for local businesses and services. This in turn creates revenue-generating opportunities for service providers, ensuring sustainable connectivity. Giga combines UNICEF's expertise in education and procurement, ITU's knowledge in regulation and policy, and the private sector's ability to implement technology solutions at a rapid pace. Having mapped over 2.1 million schools across 136 countries on the Project Connect Platform, Giga has already connected over 5,561 schools in 20 countries, benefiting more than 2.1 million students. It is the only named initiative for connectivity in the UN Secretary-General's Digital Cooperation Roadmap and his Common Agenda. Through its collaborative efforts, Giga aims to bridge the digital divide and provide equal access to education for all.
