GHI (Global Harmonization Initiative) is a brand dedicated to advancing the global harmonization of food safety laws and regulations through scientific consensus, education, and advocacy. Founded in 2004, GHI is a network of individual scientists and scientific organizations working together to promote the harmonization of global food safety regulations and legislation based on sound science. GHI aims to achieve consensus on the science underlying food regulations and legislation to ensure the global availability of safe and wholesome food products. By eliminating regulatory and legislative differences between countries, GHI believes it can have a significant positive impact. It will help reduce world hunger, prevent unnecessary destruction of safe food due to trade barriers, eliminate food safety policies based on insufficient science, reduce the risk of foodborne illness outbreaks, and boost technological innovation in the food industry. At the core of GHI's strategy are its Working Groups (WGs), formed by experts in food safety, nutrition, regulation, and trade. These WGs collect and evaluate data to produce white papers and position statements on controversies and issues in food science. GHI also communicates the principles of food safety science to stakeholders, from the general public to policymakers, through its Ambassador Programme, digital platforms, and presentations. GHI is governed by a board of highly respected food scientists, regulatory experts, and industry professionals. The board is supported by a leadership team and a Supervisory Board, ensuring the impartiality and integrity of GHI's consensus process. GHI is a registered non-profit association and has ANBI status in The Netherlands, meaning that donations to GHI can be deducted against income tax in the Netherlands and EU countries. Membership in GHI is free for qualified scientists, promoting inclusivity and the participation of the best minds in food science. GHI relies on donations to fund its activities and encourages individuals to contribute to make a difference in global food safety.
