About
Description
GrassROOTS Community Foundation (GCF) is a training organization focused on public health and social action. With a mission to create a world where all girls grow up to be healthy women, GCF invests in the well-being of community members and teaches them how to use their energy to transform themselves, their families, and communities. GCF supports, develops, and tailors wellness programs for women and girls, particularly those who have grown up in economic distress.
They advocate for policies and practices that reduce racial and gender disparities and promote equity. The foundation engages and unites communities for better health, providing funds and technical support to community health initiatives. They also investigate and collect data to inform policy and practice, as well as advocate for health programs and policies that benefit women and girls.
Through their initiatives and programs, GCF addresses four overlapping areas of wellness: Physical Health, Mental Health, Sexual Health, and Economics of Health. Inspired by African principles of harmony called Maat, the foundation utilizes principles such as Truth, Order, Balance, and Reciprocity in their work. GCF focuses on ten cities in the US where women and girls face high incidences of poverty, crime, obesity, breast cancer, suicide, and HIV/AIDS.
Through seed funding, grants, and public support, they provide health programs, workshops, financial assistance, and research support to community-based organizations serving disadvantaged women and girls. Led by a voluntary leadership team composed of individuals from various fields, GCF is committed to contributing to health equity and mobilizing community action to offset economic disadvantages. Stay connected with GCF through their e-newsletter and social media networks to learn more about their work, volunteer opportunities, and ways to support their mission of creating a healthier future for all girls
