## Description

The Association for Gravestone Studies (AGS) is an international organization founded in 1977 to further the study and preservation of gravestones. Its interests span gravemarkers from all periods and in varied styles, bringing together people drawn to genealogy, history, folk art, and related subjects. AGS supports this work through publications, conferences, workshops, and exhibits, and offers resources for learning about cemetery preservation, gravestone symbolism, and the history of burial markers.

Members can participate in chapters, a book club, and events such as Carvers and Cocktails and study tours. The organization holds conferences and provides student fellowships and awards, including the Oakley and Forbes awards. Its publications include the AGS Quarterly, a bulletin focused on gravestone studies, Markers, and an e-newsletter. The AGS website also offers an online store, archives, a library, preservation information, external resources, and details about membership and giving. Based in Massachusetts, AGS serves an international community interested in understanding and preserving gravestones.
