Greener Litigation

Greener Litigation is a brand committed to making a positive impact on the environment through changes in litigation practices. Founded in response to the Civil Justice Council's call for action on the impact of COVID-19 measures on the carbon emissions of the civil justice system, Greener Litigation aims to reduce the carbon footprint of court disputes and promote sustainability in the legal sector.

Their mission is aligned with the objective of restricting global warming to 1.5°C as set out in the 2015 Paris Agreement. By developing and publishing guidelines for court users, analyzing the role of technology in achieving net zero emissions, engaging with courts to incorporate meaningful change into litigation practice rules, and expanding their reach both within the UK and internationally, Greener Litigation is paving the way for a greener future in dispute resolution.

To date, they have garnered over 75 institutional signatories, received recognition for their sustainability initiative at The Lawyer Awards 2022, and actively participated in key events to promote their work. They have also launched the Associate Members Pledge, which recognizes the important role non-litigation businesses have in supporting Greener Litigation's mission.

Greener Litigation operates through a Steering Committee, composed of various leading litigation practices, and three working groups focused on court engagement, litigation technology, and outreach. These groups work collaboratively to achieve the objectives of the pledge.
