GoMRI (Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative) is an independent research program committed to investigating the effects of oil spills on the environment and public health. With a mission to improve our understanding of the dynamics of such events and their impacts, GoMRI aims to develop technologies for spill mitigation, oil detection, and remediation. By conducting comprehensive studies and gathering scientific information, GoMRI seeks to enhance society's ability to respond to and mitigate the consequences of petroleum pollution in the Gulf of Mexico and its affected coastal states.

Supported by a generous commitment of up to $500 million over 10 years from BP, GoMRI funds research consortia and grants to establish critical baseline data and support ongoing observations and sampling efforts. Through its work, GoMRI strives not only to restore the marine and coastal ecosystems of the Gulf of Mexico but also to improve their long-term environmental health
