## Description

Harlem Stage is a renowned performing arts center that has been bridging Harlem's cultural legacy to contemporary artists of color for nearly 40 years. Their mission is to perpetuate and celebrate the unique and diverse artistic legacy of Harlem by providing opportunities, commissioning, and supporting visionary artists of color. They make performances easily accessible to all audiences, introduce children to the rich diversity of the performing arts, and respond to historical and contemporary conditions that shape our lives and communities. Harlem Stage is known for commissioning and presenting innovative and vital work by legendary artists such as Harry Belafonte, Abbey Lincoln, Maya Angelou, and Tito Puente, as well as contemporary artists like Mumu Fresh and Vijay Iyer. They also offer education programs that serve over 2,300 New York City schoolchildren each year, aiming to cultivate cultural literacy and foster respect for diversity. In addition to their commitment to the performing arts, Harlem Stage supports music, dance, and film through various programming initiatives, including WaterWorks, E-Moves, and a selection of thought-provoking films by emerging filmmakers of color. Harlem Stage is an invaluable incubator of talent and continues to take risks to promote visionary artists.
