## Description

Health Justice Initiative (HJI) is a community-driven public health and legal-medical nonprofit focused on advancing healthcare equity for medically underserved New Yorkers. The organization uses legal advocacy, community education, and policy work to address barriers that disproportionately affect people of color and households with low incomes, including discrimination, denial of care, language barriers, medical debt, and limited access to insurance and other resources.

HJI provides free or low-cost legal assistance and navigation support to individuals and families facing health-related challenges. Its services include direct legal representation, drop-in community legal clinics, and help with medical proxies, powers of attorney, and healthcare disputes. HJI also offers Know-Your-Rights workshops, educational materials, and assistance enrolling in Medicaid, Medicare, and marketplace insurance. Through its developing Community Health Navigator program, the initiative provides professional training and connects people with resources.

At the policy level, HJI reviews proposed legislation and advocates with New York City and State lawmakers for fairer healthcare policies, with particular attention to medical debt and unequal health outcomes.
