## Description

Heemkundekring De Kommanderij is a local heritage association dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Gemert. Since 1941, its members have researched, studied and written about the area, helping bring its past to life for residents, researchers and visitors. The association covers Gemert’s long history, from early settlement and agriculture to its distinctive status as a free lordship and later commandery of the Teutonic Order.

Through working groups, publications and public activities, De Kommanderij makes local heritage accessible. Its programme includes meetings, courses, excursions and guided tours, including walks through Gemert’s historic centre. The association also maintains a broad collection of historical documentation, with books, archival sources, photographs, videos, periodicals and personal stories. Online resources explore topics such as monuments, notable people, street names, local dialect and the history of Gemert.

Visitors can follow the association’s news and events through Heemberichten, browse its webshop for books, photographs and subscriptions, or learn how to become a member. Its work connects community life with the study and appreciation of local heritage.
