## Description

Henkada Judo Club is a long-established club in Hamilton, New Zealand, offering judo training for junior and senior players of varied abilities and ambitions. Founded in 1958 by Dutch immigrant Henk Franken, the incorporated society has grown from its early training sessions in a River Road garage and has produced black belts and New Zealand representatives. Judo, or “the gentle way,” is a Japanese martial art and combat sport that uses throws, grappling, holds, armlocks and strangles. Training also develops skills and principles that can support self-defence.

The club welcomes beginners and experienced judoka, whether they want to compete or participate recreationally. Some members compete at national and international levels. Classes are held on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Hamilton Old Boys Rugby Football Club dojo, with juniors aged 8–15 training from 6:00 to 7:30 pm and seniors from 7:30 to 9:00 pm. Senior classes are led by Sensei Derek Maggs, a 5th Dan black belt with more than 40 years’ judo experience; qualified coaches also teach the junior classes.
