## Description

The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is an international scientific collaboration that operates a facility for exploring the high-energy Universe. Based in Namibia’s Khomas Highland, about 100 kilometres southwest of Windhoek, H.E.S.S. uses imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes to study gamma rays arriving from the Southern Hemisphere. Its research investigates a wide range of cosmic sources and phenomena, including objects in the Galactic Centre, extragalactic sources, gamma-ray bursts, and possible signatures of dark matter. The collaboration shares its findings through scientific publications, conference contributions, announcements, press releases, and regular features highlighting gamma-ray sources. Its website also provides information about the telescopes, the Namibian site, the science conducted with the facility, and the collaboration’s organisation. Resources for researchers include publication listings, data files associated with studies, telescope specifications, proposal information, a visibility calculator, and tools for public and internal use. H.E.S.S. also offers public test data and educational material explaining how Cherenkov telescopes detect high-energy gamma rays, connecting professional astrophysics with accessible information about the experiment and its discoveries.
