Hippo Roller is a social enterprise based in South Africa that has been manufacturing and distributing their innovative Hippo Rollers for over 30 years. These rollers are designed to provide a solution to the water crisis faced by many communities, particularly in rural areas. Traditionally, water collection involved carrying heavy buckets balanced on the head, a time-consuming and difficult task. The Hippo Roller, however, allows for the transportation of more water with ease, even in tough terrains, thereby empowering women, children, and the elderly who often bear the burden. The rollers have proven to be extremely durable and are embedded with grains of sand for added protection. By alleviating the physical strain of water collection, Hippo Rollers enable children to go to school on time and improve their quality of education, leading to better employment opportunities. They also have a specially designed irrigation cap that allows for food gardens to be watered effectively. Nelson Mandela himself recognized the Social Impact Value of Hippo Rollers, as they empower women and youth, create jobs, and contribute to sustainability. Currently, these rollers are manufactured in South Africa and exported to many countries, making a global impact. The goal is to continue scaling up production and distribution to further improve affordability and accessibility. With over 65,000 Hippo Rollers already distributed to 56 countries, they have positively impacted over 650,000 direct beneficiaries and countless others indirectly.
