## Description

National Hispanic American Heritage Month is a tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched the nation and society. This annual observance takes place from September 15 to October 15. It celebrates the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The observance originated in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week and was later expanded to a month-long celebration in 1988. This period was chosen to coincide with the independence days of several Latin American countries. September 15 is significant as it marks the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Additionally, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. During National Hispanic American Heritage Month, exhibits, collections, audio, and video resources are available to deepen public understanding of Hispanic heritage. This collaborative project between the Library of Congress and various institutions aims to foster appreciation and recognition of Hispanic contributions to American history and culture.
