## Description

The Texas General Land Office (GLO) boasts an impressive map collection that includes over 45,000 maps, sketches, and drawings, covering nearly five centuries of history from European exploration to contemporary times. This extensive collection features a diverse range of maps, including those of Spanish and Mexican Texas, as well as maps representing the Republic and state of Texas, land districts, counties, and city layouts. Many of these maps were created to support public domain administration and critical infrastructure initiatives, such as railroads and the construction of the Texas State Capitol in 1888. The GLO has also expanded its collection to include topographic and aerial imagery, with a focus on real estate development, ranching, mineral leasing, and coastal protection. In an effort to broaden access, the agency collaborates with various public and private collections to provide digital access to historical maps that extend beyond its physical holdings. Overall, the GLO's map collection is a vital resource for understanding Texas's rich historical landscape.
