## Description

The Historical Population Register (HBR), presented at histreg.no, is a research infrastructure under development in Norway. Built through projects supported by the Research Council of Norway, it aims to extend the modern population register back to 1800. HBR links records referring to the same person and connects family members across historical sources, principally church books and censuses digitised and published by the National Archives of Norway.

The site’s open register covers deceased people who lived in Norway, with most source records dating from before 1923. Users can search for individuals and explore their life histories and family relationships. A separate, restricted section is linked to the national population register from 1964 and is available only to approved professional researchers.

HBR also invites contributors to help manually connect records, check automated links and family relationships, write biographies, or add references. The website provides search tools, information about sources and research, statistical analysis, examples, and links to related archives, museums, and local-history resources.
