## Description

The Historical Society of Michigan (HSM) is the state's oldest cultural organization, established in 1828. As a member-supported educational nonprofit organization, HSM strives to connect Michigan's past with its residents and organizations. Through a wide range of programs and events, publications, workshops, and networking opportunities, HSM provides valuable support to local history organizations. While not affiliated with the state government, HSM is recognized as the official state historical society. Although it does not have collections, exhibits, or archives, HSM plays a crucial role in preserving and promoting Michigan's rich history. It does not operate the state museum or archives located at the Michigan Historical Center in downtown Lansing. By becoming a member, individuals and organizations can actively participate in HSM's activities and enjoy various benefits such as access to Michigan History magazine, Chronicle magazine, free History Hounds weekly lectures, and exclusive discounts. HSM also hosts three annual conferences, each focusing on different regions of Michigan. Whether you're a history enthusiast or looking to explore the state's past, the Historical Society of Michigan welcomes you to join their mission of celebrating and preserving Michigan's stories.
