## Description

The National Hydrographic Office (NHO), through the Indian Naval Hydrographic Department (INHD), is the Government of India’s nodal agency for hydrographic surveys and nautical charting. Operating under the Chief Hydrographer to the Government of India, it supports safe navigation, naval operations and maritime awareness with accurate hydrographic information and modern survey practices.

INHD conducts navigation, defence and specialised hydrographic surveys in accordance with International Hydrographic Organization standards. It produces and maintains official paper charts, Electronic Navigational Charts and other nautical publications for Indian waters and the Indian Ocean Region. Its maritime safety services coordinate NAVAREA VIII warnings and NAVTEX broadcasts, while India WINS provides access to navigational safety information. Digital resources include the SindhuNidhi marine data platform, an online chart catalogue and searchable Indian Notices to Mariners.

Through the National Institute of Hydrography in Goa, the department offers recognised Cat A and Cat B training for Indian and international naval personnel, civilians and maritime professionals.
