Arizona DOT, also known as ADOT, is the brand behind the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project. This ambitious project spans 11 miles along Interstate 10, from the Loop 202 to I-17 near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. It is ADOT's most significant urban freeway reconstruction endeavor to date. The primary goal of the project is to enhance traffic flow and reduce travel times during peak hours. The project encompasses various components aimed at achieving these objectives. Notable features include widening I-10 to six general-purpose lanes with two high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes in each direction, as well as constructing collector-distributor roads that separate through-traffic from local traffic entering or exiting the highway. Additionally, the I-10 interchange with SR 143 will be rebuilt to create direct connections for drivers in the I-10 HOV lanes. Other activities include bridge replacements, widening bridges over the Salt River, constructing pedestrian and bicycle bridges, improving the Sun Circle Trail crossing, and building sound and retaining walls as needed. ADOT is executing this project as a Public-Private Partnership (P3) and Design-Build (DB) venture. The DB team, known as Broadway Curve Constructors, comprises Pulice Construction Inc., FNF Construction Inc., and Flatiron Constructors, Inc. The project designers include T.Y. Lin International Group, Stanley Consultants, and Aztec Engineering. The project's history dates back to the Maricopa Association of Governments' Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) funded by the half-cent sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004. The goal of the project is to reduce travel times, improve airport access, support ridesharing and transit, and accommodate future growth projections in the region. The proposed improvements were developed based on the MAG Spine Study, and an Environmental Assessment (EA) was conducted to evaluate the project's impact. A Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) was issued in April 2020, leading to the project's environmental clearance and subsequent design and construction phases. With ADOT's dedication to improving transportation and maintaining safe roadways, the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project demonstrates their commitment to enhancing the travel experience for residents and visitors in Arizona.
