About

Description

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is a global institution that investigates and tries individuals who are accused of committing the most serious crimes that concern the international community. These include genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of aggression. Founded by an international treaty called the Rome Statute, the ICC is the world's first permanent international criminal court.

The Court plays a vital role in the fight against impunity, seeking to hold the perpetrators accountable for their crimes and prevent future occurrences. It operates as a court of last resort, complementing the efforts of national Courts. The ICC ensures fair trials, upholds defendants' rights, protects the voices of victims, engages in outreach with affected communities, and supports a two-way dialogue.

With over 900 staff members from around 100 countries, the ICC operates from its headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands. By joining the Rome Statute system, countries take a stand against international crimes, promoting justice and lasting peace
