## Description

The Institute for Democracy and Civil Society (IDZ) is an independent research institute based in Jena, Thuringia, dedicated to strengthening democratic culture and civil society. Founded in 2016, it is operated by the Amadeu Antonio Foundation and supported by Thuringia’s state programme for democracy, tolerance and openness. Since 2020, IDZ has also been one of eleven locations in Germany’s Research Institute Social Cohesion.

IDZ conducts research into threats to democracy, including right-wing extremism, antisemitism, racism, discrimination, hate speech and social division. Its projects examine topics such as democratic participation in rural communities, elections, online hate and disinformation, and the role of associations in democratic life. The institute also documents antisemitic incidents in Thuringia through RIAS Thüringen.

Alongside research, IDZ shares knowledge with policymakers, civil society and the public through publications, reports, events and media contributions. Its offerings include the “Wissen schafft Demokratie” publication series, the journal “Zeitschrift für Rechtsextremismusforschung,” factsheets, analyses and public discussions. Through this combination of research and knowledge transfer, IDZ supports informed debate and democratic engagement.
