## Description

The Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL), based in Leipzig, is a research institute that examines social processes from geographical perspectives and provides knowledge to support balanced regional development. Its work explores how places and regions change, how local concerns are negotiated, and how knowledge, space and everyday practices interact. Research spans the regional geography of Europe, the theory, methods and history of geography, and cartography and visual communication. The institute also conducts cross-disciplinary projects, including research on visual regional geographies and social transformation.

Alongside research, the IfL supports the study and communication of geography through resources and services including a library, archive, digital collections, map and atlas collections, exhibitions, and a cartography research workshop. It publishes research, shares findings with wider audiences, and participates in academic networks and public events. The institute also offers opportunities for early-career researchers, guests, trainees and those seeking employment or further education. Through its research and knowledge-transfer activities, the IfL connects geographical scholarship with regional development and public discussion.
