## Description

The Instituto Histórico e Geográfico do Rio Grande do Sul (IHGRGS) is a nonprofit scientific and cultural association founded on August 5, 1920. Based in Porto Alegre, it promotes research and public knowledge in history, geography, archaeology, literature, linguistics, social memory, law, social sciences, and cultural heritage, with particular attention to Rio Grande do Sul. The institute preserves personal and institutional collections and maintains a library, music-score collection, newspaper archive, and map collection, together holding around 100,000 titles. Researchers and the public can explore its archival and digital collections, including digitized rare books, maps, and documents, as well as genealogy resources and online publications. IHGRGS shares research through its semestral journal, thematic collections, e-books, articles, and videos, and organizes lectures and conferences. Its website provides access to the journal’s digitized editions, published since 1921, and other virtual library resources. The institute also works with historical and geographic institutes across the state and supports the promotion and protection of Brazilian cultural heritage, especially heritage connected to Rio Grande do Sul.
