Description

IHMC, the Institute for Human & Machine Cognition, is a renowned not-for-profit research institute affiliated with multiple Florida universities. Founded at the University of West Florida, IHMC has two campuses. The main campus is situated in historic downtown Pensacola and opened in 1999 as part of an urban revitalization project.

The second campus, located in Ocala, was established in 2010 near major university research partners in Florida’s tech corridor. IHMC's primary research areas include artificial intelligence, augmentics, human-centered computing, robotics, exoskeletons, and health resilience. Their teams work tirelessly to maximize human performance in high-stress environments using cutting-edge technologies.

In fact, IHMC has recently announced plans to construct a $30 million research complex in Pensacola to further support healthspan, resilience, and performance research. IHMC takes a holistic approach, combining the strengths of human and machine to create systems that enhance capabilities. Researchers at IHMC come from diverse backgrounds, including computer science, psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, philosophy, engineering, and social sciences.

This interdisciplinary approach allows for collaboration and innovation across various disciplines. The institute's research falls into three broad categories: Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Exoskeletons, and Healthspan, Resilience, and Performance. IHMC actively collaborates with industry and government partners to develop relevant science and technology.

Funding for their research comes from various sources, including DARPA, NSF, NASA, and private organizations like Raytheon and Microsoft. With a commitment to pushing the boundaries of human and machine interaction, IHMC continues to pave the way for groundbreaking advancements in technology and research
