## Description

The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) is an autonomous institute under India’s Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. With a history dating to 1786, it conducts research to advance understanding of the universe. Its research spans the Sun and Solar System, stars, interstellar matter and galaxies, and theoretical astrophysics. IIA operates observatories and research facilities including Kodaikanal Observatory, Vainu Bappu Observatory, Gauribidanur Observatory, the Indian Astronomical Observatory, and the CREST Campus.

The institute publishes research, highlights recent scientific findings, and hosts seminars, colloquia, meetings, and conferences. It also supports major astronomy and space-science projects, including India-TMT, NLST, NLOT, Aditya-L1/VELC, UVIT, and other space payloads. IIA offers opportunities for students and researchers through visiting-student programmes, internships, graduate study, PhD and M.Tech-PhD programmes, and postdoctoral positions. Alongside its research and education, the institute provides public outreach initiatives, visitor information, and resources such as its library, image galleries, and annual reports.
