## Description

The ICAR-Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research (IIWBR) is a premier institution dedicated to advancing wheat and barley research in India. Established in Karnal in 2014, IIWBR evolved from the All India Coordinated Wheat Improvement Project, which has been at the forefront of wheat research since 1965. With a rich history tracing back to the early 20th century, the institute focuses on developing high-yielding, disease-resistant wheat varieties that cater to diverse agro-ecological conditions.

IIWBR has successfully released over 498 wheat varieties, significantly boosting India's wheat production from 12.5 million tons in 1964 to 107.59 million tons in the 2019-20 cycle. The institute operates multiple research stations and emphasizes sustainable agricultural practices, aiming to achieve a projected wheat demand of 140 million tons by 2050. Through cutting-edge research in crop improvement, biofortification, and innovative hybridization techniques, IIWBR is poised to enhance food security while addressing challenges such as climate resilience and nutritional deficiencies.
