## Description

ILRU (Independent Living Research Utilization) is a national program that aims to promote independence for individuals with disabilities through research, education, and consultation. Established in 1977, ILRU is a program of TIRR Memorial Hermann, a renowned medical rehabilitation facility for people with disabilities. With a team comprising mostly individuals with disabilities, ILRU provides training, information, and technical assistance to independent living centers, rehabilitation agencies, consumer organizations, educational institutions, and other related organizations on a national and international scale.

ILRU has made significant contributions to the field of independent living through its major accomplishments. These include expertise in areas such as Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, assistive technology, core services for centers for independent living (CILs), peer counseling and support, and institutional transition. ILRU is also actively involved in areas such as disability law, emergency preparedness, health and wellness, housing and transportation, as well as inclusion and diversity.

Supported by grants from the U.S. Administration for Community Living, ILRU remains dedicated to expanding the knowledge and utilization of research findings to enhance independent living opportunities for people with disabilities.
