## Description

Immanuel is a community Christmas drama presented each year on December 23 at the church hill in Nurmes, Finland. Staged since 1989, the production tells the story of the first Christmas, from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Audiences follow the performers between scenes, making the performance an immersive shared experience. Admission is free, and the outdoor event welcomes thousands of visitors in all kinds of weather. Its enduring motto, “The light no longer diminishes,” reflects the drama’s message of hope and its place in local Christmas traditions.

The Nurmes Immanuel Christmas Drama Support Association organizes and raises funds for the production, supported by generations of performers, volunteers, and audience members. It invites people to take part in acting, practical volunteer work, and association administration. Fundraising activities include Christmas cards and a seasonal café serving treats and hot drinks. The association also offers membership for an annual fee. With support from the Vaara-Karjala Leader rural funding program, it has acquired equipment to improve the production’s lighting.
