## Description

CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology (CSIR-IMTECH) is a multidisciplinary research institute in Chandigarh, India, operating under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research within the Ministry of Science and Technology. It advances microbial science and technology through research, specialist facilities, training and collaboration. Its research spans biochemistry and engineering, data science, infectious diseases, microbial ecosystems, medicinal chemistry and protein science. Scientists investigate subjects including protein structure and function, molecular mechanisms and enzyme characterization, using structural, biophysical and biochemical methods.

The institute supports research and innovation through platforms such as its Bioinformatics Centre, instrumentation services and project management and business development functions. Its Microbial Type Culture Collection and Gene Bank (MTCC), established in 1986 and jointly supported by CSIR and the Department of Biotechnology, is a national facility. IMTECH also offers access to research infrastructure, dissertation training for students and skill-development programmes. Through its business development group, the institute shares technologies available for licensing and welcomes corporate investment in research and development.
