Initrogen is the International Nitrogen Initiative (INI), an international program established in 2003 under the sponsorship of the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) and the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP). The INI aims to optimize nitrogen's positive impact on sustainable food production while reducing its negative effects on human health and the environment resulting from food and energy production. As a sustained partner of Future Earth, the INI is working towards achieving these goals through a coordinated and collaborative effort.

To coordinate the program, INI has a Steering Committee led by a chair and six regional center directors representing Africa, Europe, Latin America, North America, South Asia, and East Asia. The Steering Committee meets every two months to discuss strategies, upcoming meetings, publications, and projects, as well as to raise awareness among policy makers, governments, stakeholders, and the public about the benefits of improving nitrogen management. INI also organizes conferences every three years, bringing together members of the international nitrogen community to exchange knowledge and discuss nitrogen-related issues.

The last conference was held in Melbourne in 2016, and the next one is scheduled to take place in Berlin in 2020
