## Description

The Indian Sociological Society (ISS) is a professional organisation supporting the study and development of sociology in India. Established in Bombay in 1951 with 107 members, it was formed through the initiative of G. S. Ghurye, then Professor and Head of the University of Bombay’s Department of Sociology. The Society began publishing its journal, Sociological Bulletin, in 1952; its publications now also include Bhartiya Samajshastra Sameeksha, a newsletter, and special and commemorative volumes. ISS brings together sociologists, researchers, teachers, students, and academic institutions through membership, committees, regional associations, workshops, and conferences. Its flagship event, the All India Sociological Conference, provides a forum for academic exchange on social issues and emerging directions in the discipline. The Society also supports young researchers through workshops and awards, maintains educational resources and video materials, and offers endowment funds. Its Code of Ethics sets aspirational principles for sociologists’ responsibilities as teachers, researchers, and practitioners. In 2026, ISS marks its 75th anniversary and plans its 51st conference in Bhubaneswar.
