## Description

The Hellenic Institute of Speleological Research (HISR) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization established in 2001 to advance scientific research, education, public awareness, and the conservation and management of Greece’s karst landscapes and underground environments. Based in Heraklion, Crete, HISR works on caves, subterranean wetlands, and the wildlife that depends on these habitats.

Its work includes field research, exploration, documentation, database development, conservation planning, and monitoring. The institute has contributed to national and international projects focused on cave fauna in Greece and the Balkans, and maintains a database of Greece’s cave fauna. Its initiatives include research on degraded caves and underground wetlands, monitoring at Kastria Cave, and the Cave Animal of the Year campaign.

HISR also supports training, environmental education, and the communication of scientific knowledge through publications, awareness activities, and collaborative projects. It works with academic institutions, other non-governmental organizations, public administrations, development agencies, and environmental education centers to promote informed stewardship of caves and karst areas.
