## Description

International Cat Day, celebrated annually on August 8, promotes the welfare of cats worldwide and encourages adoption. Established in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and currently managed by UK charity International Cat Care (iCatCare), this global event garners participation from over 47 countries. The theme for 2026, Cats for Climate, emphasizes the importance of feline welfare in the context of environmental concerns.

Participating businesses and organizations offer various promotions and events, such as reduced adoption fees at shelters. For example, Cats Protection is running an £8 adoption fee event in the UK, while the Best Friends Animal Society hosts a nationwide fee-waived adoption drive in the U.S. Additionally, cat lovers can engage in fun social media challenges like the #CatWindowChallenge2026 and contribute to the first-ever Global Cat Census. With its focus on fostering awareness of cat issues and promoting responsible pet ownership, International Cat Day continues to be a pivotal occasion for cat enthusiasts and advocates alike.
