## Description

The Instituto Português do Sangue e da Transplantação (IPST, IP) is Portugal’s national public institute responsible for regulating and supporting transfusion medicine and transplantation. Its mission covers the full chain of human donation and biological material management: promoting and coordinating donations, collecting and testing blood, processing and preserving blood components, and storing and distributing blood, organs, tissues, and human cells. The institute works to encourage donations and support national self-sufficiency in these essential resources.

IPST provides information and services for donors, citizens, and healthcare professionals. These include guidance on blood donation and eligibility self-assessment, blood collection session information, national and regional blood reserve updates, and registration with CEDACE, Portugal’s register of bone marrow donors. Its areas of activity also include the Public Bank of Umbilical Cord Blood, tissue services, and information about organ donation and transplantation. Through public campaigns, news, educational resources, and institutional communications, IPST promotes awareness of donation and explains how people can participate.
