## Description

The Irish Literary Society is a London-based charitable organisation founded in 1892 by figures including W. B. Yeats and Douglas Hyde, alongside other leaders of the Irish Literary Revival. Its purpose is to promote appreciation of Irish literature and culture and provide a forum for intellectual and social activities connected with these interests. The Society brings together readers, writers and others interested in Irish cultural life through a varied programme of public events, lectures and member activities.

Its events explore Irish writers, poetry, history and culture, with past talks and discussions featuring authors, poets, critics and scholars. The Society also hosts annual joint lectures with partner organisations, including the Irish Texts Society and the Irish Embassy. Members can take part in special activities such as visits to galleries and archives, theatre trips, and workshops celebrating member poets. The Society collaborates with Irish cultural and community organisations in the UK and receives support from the Irish government’s Emigrant Support Programme.
